Functional Anatomy of the Ear
The ear is divided into three different sections: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear.
Hearing and balance are the two main functions performed by the human ear. Each section of the ear is used either for hearing or for balance.
The most sensitive part of the ear is the ear drum.
Ear infection is a very common, painful complaint and can affect adults as well as children.
Echinacea purpurea is the best known and researched herb for stimulating the immune system. Over 500 scientific studies have documented the effectiveness of this herb. Research has shown that Echinacea increases the activity of the immune system cells, reduces inflammation and inhibits growth of bacteria, viruses and fungi. These properties make Echinacea the ideal herb for treating infection and reducing inflammation in the ear.
Dose: Tincture - 10 to 30 drops every 2 hours. Tea: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 to 6 times daily. Powder: Half a teaspoon with 1 glass of water; 3 to 6 times daily.
Goldenseal is considered a natural antibiotic and is most often combined with echinacea in preparations designed to strengthen the immune system. It is also useful as an antiseptic. Goldenseal contains a compound called berberine that kills many types of germs. Berberine may also activate white blood cells, making them more effective at fighting infection and strengthening the immune system. For these reasons, berberine is used as an antibiotic and disinfectant, both externally and internally. For external use, mix with olive oil and use as eardrops. To fight infection internally take 30 - 120 mg of standardised extract up to 3 times daily.
Garlic is an effective topical treatment for otitis externa. Warm up a small quantity of olive oil with a crushed garlic clove. Strain out the garlic, and apply a few drops to the affected ear. Seal with a ball of cotton wool. The oil is soothing to inflamed skin, and garlic has very potent anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties to fight the infection.
Pulsatilla (Pasque Flower) is an important nerve relaxant, soothing tonic and analgesic herb. High doses may be irritating, so it is best used as a homeopathic remedy.
Viola tricolor belongs to those herbs containing Salicylic acid and may therefore be used for minor pains. Take half a teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily.
Ear-Heal Drops are a safe and effective, internal treatment for ear infections, specially formulated for adults and children over 10 years old (babies and children under 10 use Eddy Ear Sprinkles).
Ear-Heal Drops are an effective natural alternative to antibiotic treatment of ear infections and are an excellent companion to Ear-OK ear drops, which are used internally directly in the ear. more...

Infection of the middle ear (otitis media) affects the part of the ear internal to the ear drum. The infection causes a build up of fluid and pus behind the ear drum, resulting in increased pressure, pain and loss of hearing.
Otitis externa is infection of the outer ear canal, and is characterised by inflammation, pain, possible discharge and itchiness.
Causes of Ear Ache
Ear infections can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. Colds and allergies predispose to ear infections by causing inflammation of the eustachian tube, which connects the ear to the throat. This blocks the normal drainage of the ear, leading to otitis media.
In many cases, ear infections recur after conventional treatment and may become chronic and difficult to get rid of. Recurring ear infections may also lead to permanent hearing loss if not treated properly.
Symptoms of Ear Infection:
Common signs and symptoms of an ear infection are:
* Pain, throbbing or aching in one or both of the ears
* Itching of the ears
* Reduced hearing
* Dizziness or loss of balance
* Nausea and vomiting
* Discharge or bleeding from the ears
* Difficulty falling asleep (especially in younger children)
Treatment for ear Infection
Conventional treatment for ear infections generally involves oral antibiotics and sometimes medicated drops. Though often effective in clearing the initial infection, antibiotics may compromise the immune system, leaving you vulnerable to recurrence and chronic infection. Antibiotics are also not effective against fungal infections of the ear.
Natural remedies can effectively reduce the pain, inflammation, throbbing and discomfort of ear infections and treat the underlying causes without the side-effects and lowered immune functioning so common with antibiotic use. Natural remedies can also be very effective in the prevention of recurring ear infections, thereby guarding against hearing impairment caused by chronic ear infection.
