Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)
What Is BPH?
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) is a very common condition amongst middle aged and elderly men. It  is an overgrowth of cells in the prostate that may be due to changes in hormone levels that occur with age.

It affects many men over age 40, and more than half of men over 60. BPH is not cancer, nor does it cause cancer. But an enlarged prostate that presses on the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder) can interfere with urination. It usually starts with having to get up two or three times during the night to go to the toilet.

Treating BPH
There are several different drugs to help reduce the size of prostate but each are associated with particular side-effects. Whilst they effectively manage the condition, they do not cure it, meaning one has to remain on treatment indefinitely. The first line of treatment is usually a prescription drug such as finasteride (Proscar).

An ancient herbal remedy for urinary problems, saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) is now popular as a supplement for prostate health-and for good reason. This little known plant has now been researched intensely over the last few years as an effective remedy for BPH. The oil in the berry contains substances called free fatty acids and these have been shown to inhibit adverse hormonal action in the prostate and so reduce inflammation and pain. The best thing about it is that it has no side effects, no contraindications and it can be taken for as long as needed.  Some people believe saw palmetto is as good as the drugs for BPH, or even better.

Note that diet also plays a very important. part in the management of this condition. One should eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, white meats such as chicken and very few fried foods. Saturated fats, such as those in most processed foods, dairy products, red meats and hard fats are best avoided.

Prognosis if Untreated
Untreated, this condition can slowly deteriorate, sometimes resulting in bladder infections, impotence and ultimately in having the prostate surgically removed.

Natural Home Remedies
Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto is believed to reduce the symptoms of BPH, such as urgent or frequent urination or urinary leaking. A number of studies have confirmed that saw palmetto - extracted from the dark purple berries of the American saw palmetto plant - can help in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the medical name for an enlarged prostate gland.

The main active ingredients in saw palmetto are the plant sterols (including beta- sitosterol) as well as various fatty acids. Together they are responsible for not only reducing inflammation in the prostate gland, but also for the promotion of hormone production involved in maintaining  the health of the prostate gland.

The German Commission E confirmed usefulness of Saw Palmetto for benign prostatic hyperplasia stages 1 and 2; urinary problems, cystitis, catarrh of the urinary tract.

Dose:Research indicates 320mg of the oil per day to be the most effective dose.

Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are an effective home remedy for prostate problems and many patients have been helped by their use. These seeds are rich in unsaturated fatty acids which are essential to the health of the prostate.

Pumpkin seeds may be taken in the form of powder sprinkled over cooked vegetables or mixed with wheat flour to make chapatis. They can also be taken in the form of a paste made with honey, or as a drink mixed with diluted milk and sugar to taste.

Dose: Persons beyond the age of fifty, who have any signs of prostate trouble should take sixty to ninety grams of pumpkin seeds per day.

Willow Herb
Clinical studies show that Willow herb (Epilobium Parviflorum) has an anti-inflammatory and healing effect on acute and chronic inflammation of the prostate. This action can help to reduce the gland to its normal size. It is recommended that all men over the age of 50 take this herb regularly as a preventative and to maintain prostate and bladder health.

Dose: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily.

Hypoxis Rooperi
This is an extract of African Potato and is traditionally used to strengthen the immune system, treat testicular tumors, prostate hypertrophy and urinary infections. The activity of Hypoxis Rooperi against BPH is ascribed to phytosterol glycosides, mainly B-sytosterol.
